Looking for a creative, easy, and fun way to ring in the New Year? Add a gourmet s’mores bar to your dessert table this year.
It’s easy. Just put out plates of a variety of graham crackers and cookies, squares of all kinds of chocolate; the usual milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and white chocolate are great options. To really glam it up, though, find some artisan and exotic flavored chocolates such as peppermint, chipotle, curry, salted, etc. We like Vosges, Chuao Chocolatier, and local Los Angeles chocolate makers Mast Brothers for interesting varieties, but get creative! 3-4 choices of chocolate is best.
Then put out bowls of marshmallow flavors, such as Gingerbread Spice, Peppi-Mint, Caramel Swirl, Toasty Coconut, and more. Again 3-4 flavors choices are best. Too many options makes it too hard to choose!
You can get really fancy and add fruit to the mix – sliced bananas, pears, strawberries etc.
Fill a glass flower vase with long bamboo skewers to put the marshmallows on for toasting. Put out 2-3 ceramic bowls with chafing dish candles (e.g. Sterno brand) in them. Be sure the chafing candles burn alcohol and do not have a wick.
This makes them food safe and won’t add candle flavor to the marshmallows. Place the bowls on top of plates as well. This ensures that if the bowls heat up on the bottom, your table or whatever surface your s’mores bar is on stays cool. It also helps to make the candles more visible so people are aware of the hot flame!
Your guests will then choose their combinations of cookies, chocolates, and marshmallows. Skewer a marshmallow or two onto the bamboo stick, hold over the chafing flame for a bit while turning it, and assemble the s’more.
Entertainment and dessert all in one!
